The semiconductor manufacturing unit will be located in the Navi Mumbai suburbs within the Raigad district. It will have an initial capacity of 40,000 wafer starts per month (WSPM) during its first phase. The total capacity is estimated to reach 80,000 WPSM upon completion.
Giving details of the investment, Fadnavis said Rs 58,763 crore would be invested in the first phase and the remaining Rs 25,184 crore in the second phase.
Sources in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology told ET that though the project has received approval at the state level, the joint application submitted by Israel's Tower Semiconductor and Adani Group is currently under review by the ministry. According to a senior official, the Indian government has given states the autonomy to set up their own semiconductor units. However, the official stressed that “all applicants hoping for incentives under the central government scheme will, however, have to seek approval from the ISM.”
If given the green signal, the project will become India's second chip manufacturing unit and the sixth semiconductor plant that will either produce or test and package silicon chips.
Earlier this week, the Union Cabinet approved Mysore-based Keynes Semicon's proposal to outsource assembly and testing unit at Rs 3,307 crore. The company plans to set up its OSAT unit in Sanand, Gujarat, with a total capacity of 6.3 million chips per day.
There are currently five semiconductor projects in India approved by the central government. These include a chip fabrication unit being built in Dholera, Gujarat and four chip packaging units. Of these, three packaging units are in Sanand, Gujarat, while one is in Morigaon, Assam. The total proposed investment in these units is Rs 1.50 lakh crore.
The chip manufacturing unit at Dholera is a joint venture between the Tata Group and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation of Taiwan, with a capacity of 50,000 WSPM.
