New Delhi: Microsoft-owned Developer platform GitHub The vision of CEO Thomas Domke Hey Breakage Language Removing barriers and promoting a more inclusive environment Codon Environment, Empowerment Non-English Developers must make progress in contributing open source Coding community. Native developers are ready to make significant contributions to the world of programming.
“AI is a great leveller. It will make it easier to navigate the existing code base without being fluent in English, as you can leverage copilot in Hindi or Kannada,” he told The Times of India on the sidelines of the ET World Leaders Forum on Saturday.
“On one hand, I see a rise in the adoption of Indian or non-English languages to enter the coding world. In many cases, you are not learning English and you are not going to read a lot of English documents. But you will simply ask the AI assistant in the language of your convenience.” He also said that AI is going to democratise non-English developers to contribute to coding.
“AI enables developers in countries where they are not comfortable speaking in English. We often see this, for example, in cultures like Japan, where there may be a lack of fluency. These developers want to contribute, but they face language barriers. AI will democratize that collaboration model even more, much as open source has already done,” he said, adding that this democratization will use the vast pool of untapped coding talent to drive technological advancement globally.
Domke grew up in a suburb called Marzahn in Berlin, which was on the east side before the wall fell. When he grew up, there wasn't much software, but today you can't imagine a world without software. The complexity of software systems has increased compared to the early 90s. He proudly calls GitHub the greatest team sport on earth.
“It's one of the few things on the planet where we collaborate with each other without cultural boundaries,” he said.
GitHub has onboarded 2.2 million additional developers in India, taking the total number of Indian developers to 15.4 million. The momentum is evident, with the Indian developer base now growing threefold from 5.8 million in 2021.
It is estimated that by the year 2027, India's developer community on GitHub will surpass the current 21 million in the US.
“This is the era of great convergence. India is going to be the largest country of software developers in 2027 and the rise of AI and the coming together of these two movements will create a huge economic opportunity for India.”
A report from GitHub showed that developers who used GitHub Copilot completed their tasks significantly faster — up to 55% faster than developers who did not use GitHub Copilot.
