Sukhoi 30-MKI fighter jets to get a boost! Ministry of Defence wants to sign a deal worth around Rs 21,000 crore to buy jet engines for itself. Su-30MKI Fighter fleet. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will manufacture engines in India from the raw material stage to replace older engines that are nearing the end of their service life.
Sources familiar with the matter told ET that about 230 engines will be ordered soon, with deliveries to be made over the next several years. The total requirement of AL 31 FP engines is about 950, as they power the entire fleet of twin-engined Su 30 MKI fighter jets.
HAL is producing these engines under a license arrangement, which involves a high degree of localization. A significant portion of the order value is expected to be attributed to the vendor and supplier base that HAL has developed over the years.
Apart from the new engines, the Su 30MKI fighter jet fleet, which forms the backbone of the Indian Air Force, will also be inducted. Indian Air Forcewill be upgraded to include completely new avionics, radars and electronic warfare suites. The first phase of the upgrade, which will be done entirely in India, will involve around 100 fighter jets.
HAL will be the nodal agency for the upgrade worth over Rs 60,000 crore in collaboration with the Indian Air Force and other partners. India had initially ordered 272 fighter jets from Russia.
The Defence Ministry has also approved an additional order for 12 extra jets to replace the ones destroyed in the crashes, worth around Rs 11,000 crore, but the deal is yet to be signed.
