BSNL to launch 4G, 5G-ready over-the-air, universal SIM platform – Times of India

New Delhi: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is preparing to introduce 4G and 5G compatible mobile phones. over-the-air (OTA) and Universal SIM (USIM) platform. The state-owned telecom company said it was launched from Chandigarh, and the disaster recovery site is located in Trichy.
“The new 4G and 5G compliant platform is designed to serve all BSNL customers across the country, offering unparalleled connectivity and service quality,” BSNL said on Friday.
BSNL is currently in the process of gradually setting up its 4G network across the country.
“The launch of this platform coincides with BSNL's ongoing network upgrades to 4G and 5G, positioning the company at the forefront of telecom innovation. This milestone is a significant step in BSNL's efforts to bridge the digital divide and empower citizens in rural and remote areas and ensure equitable access to advanced telecom services,” BSNL said in a statement.
The Over-the-Air (OTA) and Universal SIM (USIM) platform offers BSNL mobile consumers the convenience of choosing a mobile number on the go and enables SIM replacement without geographical restrictions.
BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi A Robert Gerard said, “This platform will be extremely useful for customers seeking SIM replacement without geographical restrictions, it will aid in modifying SIM profiles and remote file management on SIM cards. Moreover, it enables SIM swapping from anywhere in the country.”
Earlier this month, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had announced that BSNL plans to install 80,000 towers for 4G services by the end of October, while the remaining 21,000 towers will be installed by March 2025. The company has already launched 4G services in select locations, including Punjab, using indigenously developed network equipment.
