New Delhi: Intense heat wave and increase in humidity with the onset of the season Monsoon Electricity consumption increased by 9% at the end of the month june Because cooling equipment is run for longer periods of time in homes and commercial establishments.
But sales of petrol, jet fuel and LPG recorded marginal growth, while diesel sales remained sluggish during the month, mainly due to subdued demand from the agricultural sector.
According to government data, electricity consumption in the month under review stood at 152.3 billion units (BU) as against 140.2 billion units (BU). The maximum demand met in a day, also known as 'peak demand met' in industry parlance, increased by 9.8% to 245.4 gigawatts (GW) from 223.2 GW in June 2023.
The early onset of a heat wave in the absence of summer rainfall pushed peak demand to a record 250.2 GW in May this year, while the previous all-time high was 243.2 GW in September 2023.
The picture for fossil fuels was mixed. Demand for diesel, a key indicator of economic activity, was 1.3% lower than in June 2023. This is largely due to lower demand from the agricultural sector. However, sequentially, sales were 0.4% higher than in May.
Petrol consumption recorded a healthy growth of 3.6%, driven by the fuel's rising share in new car sales and people's preference for personal vehicles for holiday travel.
